Dear readers,
As you’re likely aware, the 2023-2024 academic year started with a tragedy. Two students died in a gun-based murder-suicide on CSU’s main campus. It happened on August 18th, the first Friday of the semester. The campus community was shaken, and there was a sense of confusion and anxiety about the incident. Many had questions about what had happened and how university procedures would change to improve future emergency responses. In this issue, we’ve covered the incident, what went wrong, and how CSU hopes to make it right.
After the crime, a variety of campus departments quickly began efforts to fight the ‘ripple effect’ – the grief and anxiety that spreads through a community after a tragedy. CSU’s Counseling Center and Residence Life coordinators were highly involved. We’ve included a rundown of campus resources for students, inspired by their efforts.
Organizations on and off campus work hard to provide opportunities for CSU students. This September, four organizations joined to hold Intentionally International, an annual social event for local and international students. For this issue, we’ve covered the event and talked with its creators.
Students everywhere are feeling the impact of economic inflation right now. School supplies get expensive – especially for art students. In response to shrinking budgets and growing expenses, we’ve included some of The Uproar staff’s best advice for saving on supplies.
Finally, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Nick, a senior working on dual degrees in computer science and art history. Over the summer I’ve moved from my previous role at The Uproar as Senior Copy Editor to my current position as Editor-in-Chief. Our previous Editor-in-Chief, Destinee Williams, gave me the honor of recommending that I take over after her graduation, which I gladly accepted. The last few months have been a flurry of activity, and I’ve already gotten to meet several wonderful people on and around campus. I’m thankful for the opportunity and hope to make The Uproar even better.
Best,
Nick
