Hello dear readers,
My name is Nick Bentley, and this edition of The Uproar is my first as Editor in Chief. A little bit about me: I am an Integrated Media major here at CSU, and prior to being EIC, I was the host of Uproar Radio on WCUG 88.5 FM. I feel honored that I was chosen to take over from our previous EIC, Nick Miller. Now for some housekeeping.
From this issue onward, all print issues of The Uproar will follow a theme. Each issue will be a different theme, and all the wonderful articles you read in print will be about different aspects of the topic. This issue’s theme is disability representation and awareness.
The topics of disability and accessibility are important, and we here at The Uproar want to bring the discussions around them to the forefront.
Media editor, Eli Schmidt, sits down with students to talk about CSU’s Center for Accommodations and if students are having their accommodations met here on campus.
Our managing editor, Nick Miller, takes a deep dive into last year’s financial budget and breaks down where the money allocated for ADA compliance and accommodations went and what places it still needs to go.
Copy editor Ashley Adamian discusses the difficulties of disability representation in the media, from bad representation to good and everything in between.
We also have an interview with Taylor Battles, conducted by our media reporter Robin Edelman, about her life and what it’s like to be a wheelchair user on campus.
Lastly, but certainly not least, Uproar illustrator Finch Vasquez took the time to write about their experiences as an autistic person and the joy they experience because of it.
While themed papers are fun and give our reporters a chance to sink their teeth into a long story, monthly print can’t cover everything happening around campus and Columbus. To ensure you can get the best news in a timely fashion and stay informed, we are trying to post breaking news to our website, uproarcsu.com! Check the website frequently to read news, opinion pieces, digital exclusives, and more!
This month, there are three digital exclusives for you to enjoy. Senior copy editor, Nadia Jacobs, looks into the alarming number of expired elevator inspection certificates on campus, senior layout editor, Vinh Huynh, talks about having a quarter life crisis, and reporter Kennedy Buckner examines the validity of southern scholarship in academics.
Housekeeping done.
I hope you enjoy this issue, and I hope you learn something. Have a good morning/day/night/evening and remember, you are loved.
Dream big and live bigger,
Nick Bentley
