When I was younger, I dreamed and gushed about my wedding day and believed that one day I’d be in that situation. The younger me would be confused when she sees that we are single and not focused on marriage. Commitment is a difficult concept because sometimes it puts you between a rock and a hard place. In the year 2025, I ask the question: Why is it so hard to commit? I got responses from two close friends of mine who spoke to me transparently when discussing commitment.
DeMyah Conner, freshman psychology major: “Commitment is hard nowadays because everyone has different reasons for why they do or do not want to commit. My reason is that, when I think of what I want a relationship to be, I have high standards. I expect more when we are in a relationship, and I feel [that] men and women aren’t giving that. We talk for a few days then they want to have sexual intercourse and do relationship stuff and nobody wants to take their time and go slow; they want to do relationship stuff without being a relationship, so they might not see the point [of a relationship] since they are already doing the relationship activities.”
Tyee Jones, freshman business major: “People don’t see the bigger picture. They seem like they want everything, but they can’t have everything. Anybody can jump into something but not like the product. When you ask my personal experience, you give your all at first with no title; do the simple things — buy things, go out — but when you see you just put all the effort and the other person isn’t putting effort, it’s a waste of time. Some people don’t see you for what you’re worth.”
In my opinion, commitment is hard, but when I click with someone, I’m willing to commit to the relationship. I have just begun to date again after a breakup, so there’s always going to be trial and error. The one thing I must remember is we are young, and you might not find your soul mate at this very moment, but they will show up. If you are reading this and dating, I wish you luck. and keep an open mind. You’ve heard my two cents, so now I ask you: Do you think it’s difficult to commit?
