According to the National Anti-Vivisection Society, animal testing has been used since the early 20th century to test products such as makeup for safety and effectiveness before releasing them to the public. Many of these tests cause irritation in animals and can potentially be lethal while often remaining ineffective.

Many mainstream beauty, hygiene, and self-care products found in drugstores are currently tested on animals; however, many current brands are switching to cruelty-free practices alongside emerging cruelty-free brands that also utilize ethically sourced ingredients. Ethical beauty brands now range from drugstore to high-end and can be found in many locations, whether it be your local Target or Sephora. Cruelty-free products can be identified by the Leaping Bunny or Cruelty-Free Bunny logo found on the labels.
